🌺 In Memory of Paul Lindsay O'Brien

"Granny"
A loving husband, father, grandfather, soldier and entertainer.

Paul Lindsay O'Brien, affectionately known to family and friends as "Granny," lived a life full of character, humor and service. Although the nickname might suggest otherwise, it came from his younger years by his sister, when he apparently carried on like an old granny. The name stayed with him for the rest of his life and became one by which many people knew him.

Born in Mudgee, New South Wales, Paul went on to serve his country during the Second World War before returning home to build a long career with the New South Wales Railways. He married Nora May Hilzenger, raised a family, and lived well into his nineties, leaving behind countless memories and stories that continue to be shared today.

🎖️ Service During World War II

During the Second World War, Paul enlisted in the Australian Army with service number NX144068, serving in New Guinea.

Unlike many soldiers, Paul's contribution extended beyond the battlefield. He was part of the Army's entertainment units, whose purpose was to boost morale among Australian troops serving far from home. Through laughter, music and performance, these concert parties provided a welcome escape from the hardships of war.

Paul had a remarkable natural talent that made him a favourite among audiences.

🦜 The Man of a Thousand Animal Calls

One of Paul's most extraordinary abilities was his gift for perfectly imitating Australian wildlife.

He could reproduce the calls of countless birds and animals with astonishing realism. Whether it was the unmistakable laugh of a kookaburra, the chatter of magpies, the grunt of a wild boar, or many other Australian creatures, his performances amazed audiences and entertained everyone around him.

It was a talent that remained with him throughout his life and became one of the many things family and friends remembered most fondly.

🚂 Life After the War

After returning home from the war, Paul joined the New South Wales Railways, where he spent the entirety of his working career.

His working life reflected the same qualities that defined him as a person—dedication, reliability and a strong work ethic. While his wartime years were filled with adventure and travel, his post-war years were devoted to providing for his family and building a life centred around home.

Paul married Nora May Hilzenger, and together they built a family whose memories of him continue to live on.

To his grandchildren, he was simply Granny—a loving grandfather whose stories, humour, remarkable animal impressions and larger-than-life personality ensured that time spent with him was never forgotten.
